PROBLEM: What To Do If The Windows Genuine Advantage Has Problems (Article: 1314)
Summary
The WGA or Windows Genuine Advantage is an attempt by Microsoft to discourage to use of pirated copies of Windows XP. Some customers may receive a message that their version of Windows is not legitimate.
Symptom
When trying to perform a Windows Update, a message appears explaining that the copy of Windows may not be legitimate.
Cause
The WGA validation process does not go correctly for some reason.
Resolution
If the following steps are performed, this issue can be resolved with Microsoft.
- go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/ and run 'Start Diagnostics'. This takes you to another site. Click 'Windows Validation'
- If the above step doesn't fix the problem, go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=en and click the "Obtain further assistance link" below 'Windows Validation' button. Click 'support team' link and start E-mail request to Microsoft WGA Support team. This is the main support channel for WGA. The response time is within 24 hours and this link is specific to WGA issues.
